Picture
Mary-Anne is the Manager, Development and Environmental Services, at Singleton Council in the NSW Hunter Valley. Mary-Anne grew up in Central Queensland on a cattle property and began her interest in science at a young age, working the land. After graduating from the University of Queensland as one of the first cohorts of Environmental Science graduates, Mary-Anne spent six years working at the Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation at UQ as a researcher, spending time in Weipa, Central Queensland, NSW, Stradbroke Island and Christmas Island researching the technical challenges to rehabilitating minesites.
In 2002, Mary-Anne began working directly in the industry, as environmental advisor for Anglo American’s German Creek Mine and then as environmental coordinator at Glencore’s United Collieries in the Hunter Valley. Mary-Anne moved into a corporate environmental and approvals role in 2007 with Centennial Coal. Finally, as a career change, Mary-Anne moved into local government in 2017. Her current role sees her overseeing a team of 30 staff with responsibility for a range of services including environmental health, sustainability, land use planning, development and building approvals and rangers.

Throughout her career, Mary-Anne has taken the fundamentals of environmental science and research into asking difficult questions about the way in which land is planned for and used, as well as solving the practical problems associated with post mining land use outcomes.

Mary-Anne has furthered her learning through a Masters of Environmental Law and a Graduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership, both of which have assisted her in developing her career. Mary-Anne is active in her local community, as a Board member for the Maitland Saints Australian Football Club, she is passionate about bringing community and community sport together.
